Guptill assault hands Pakistan second loss

The second ODI will be played at Nelson's Saxton Oval on Tuesday at 03:00 AM

A display of power hitting from Martin Guptill has steered New Zealand to an eight-wicket win over Pakistan in a weather-affected second one-day cricket worldwide in Nelson.

For the second time this series, rain intervened before the match was finished with New Zealand in front.

The tourists were 127-6 when Hafeez was out in the 32nd over and looked likely to fall well below a par score at Saxton Oval where teams batting first in ODIs average 260. Fine weather is forecast.

Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik kept New Zealand at bay temporarily with a 45-run partnership before Malik was caught by Southee at long-on off the bowling of Todd Astle for 27.

But while they got Colin Munro (0) early and Shadab took a great catch to remove Kane Williamson (19), Pakistan had no answers after the break as Guptill quickly took the game - and potentially the five-match series - away from them.

Having restricted oppositions to manageable scores all through their recent golden run, Pakistan were let down by their bowlers in Wellington. Later, came to chase New Zealand was given target of chasing 151 runs in 25 overs.

Attention now turns to University Oval in Dunedin where allrounder Colin de Grandhomme will rejoin the Black Caps for game three after he was granted leave following the sudden death of his father, Laurence, in Zimbabwe last month.

The Pakistan cricket team, beaten in the series opener which was also impacted by rain, had earlier elected to bat and reached 246-9 thanks to some lower-order hitting.

Black Caps selector Gavin Larsen said the team was looking forward to seeing De Grandhomme back in the side.

Mohammad Hafeez top scored with 60, while Shadab Khan and Hasan Ali scored half centuires late in the innings.

Trent Boult (one for 54) and Tim Southee (two for 57) were parsimonious early, restricting Pakistan to 39 for two after nine overs before Mitchell Santner was introduced.

Eventually, New Zealand was declared the victor of the first ODI by 61 runs under D/L method.

However, Hasan and Shadab's partnership allowed them to set a competitive total.

Although every New Zealand bowler except Munro took at least one wicket, Ferguson was clear standout, the Black Caps' quick ending up with the decent figures of 3-39.
