Bears hire Hiestand for second stint as offensive line coach

Bears Reportedly Hire Special Teams Coordinator Other Coaches

The Chicago Bears have hired Mark Helfrich as their new offensive coordinator. He became the replacement to head coach Chip Kelly at OR and coached the Ducks from 2013-16 before spending this past season as an analyst.

During his four seasons at Oregon, Helfrich's teams averaged 42.6 points and 536.7 yards per game.

Perhaps the biggest appeal of the Colts' job is having Andrew Luck, one of the few franchise quarterbacks in the NFL.

In those four seasons, OR averaged 42.6 points per game and 536.7 yards per game, which ranked second and third among FBS schools, respectively, during that time period.

More news: Seahawks will finally play in London: 2018 game there against Oakland

London has spent nine seasons in the National Football League - the past four as Houston's running backs coach. With his experience at the College Level and getting a Coordinator Position, all the pressure is off. I really think Helfrich will thrive in managing a smaller group of players rather than an entire locker room, as there were obvious problems in his last season at Oregon.

Recently, there were reports that he would potentially rejoin former boss Chip Kelly and serve as the offensive coordinator for UCLA, as well as a job on Tom Herman's Texas staff. In Helfrich's eight years in Eugene, Oregon consistently had one of the most prolific offenses in all of college football.

When Helfrich was the OC at Oregon, Kelly called plays, much like Nagy will do in Chicago, but Helfrich was very involved in scheming, planning and utilizing personnel.

So Helfrich won't just be a spread offense guy bringing that system to Chicago. Nagy signed on with the Philadelphia Eagles under Reid as a coaching intern in 2008 and traveled to Kansas City with Reid in 2013, slowly moving up the ranks along the way. He had spent the decade before working as quarterbacks coach for Boise State, Arizona State and Colorado.
