GM plans driverless ride-hailing service without manual controls for 2019

General Motors Shows Self Driving Car With No Steering Wheel Or Pedals

The automaker has filed a safety petition with the Department of Transportation for its fourth-generation self-driving Cruise AV, its first production-ready vehicle built from the start to operate safely on its own.

Legislation to allow carmakers to test driverless vehicles on US roads with less hassle - called the SELF DRIVE act - is still pending approval in the Senate, although it has already been passed by the House of Representatives.

The vehicle company recently filed a Safety Petition with the Department of Transportation, asking for permission to "safely deploy self-driving [vehicles] in 2019".

If granted, the waiver would allow GM to launch as many as 2,500 self-driving vehicles a year into a form of taxi service and help pave the way for fully autonomous vehicles to move from niche testing fleets into broader commercial applications. He says the company isn't announcing how many will be made.

If we are to consider a vehicle truly autonomous, it would surely be at the point where human controls are completely removed such as a steering wheel and pedals.

GM says it will mass produce Cruise AV without a steering wheel or pedals

The Chevy Bolt-based Cruise EV has not steering wheel, pedals or gear selector.

The Cruise AV has 360-degree vision, both night and day, GM says.

Like the report Waymo issued previous year, GM's report discusses how its sensors and software work, and how it validates new technology at GM test tracks with driving simulators and on-the-road experience.

In 2014, Google introduced a self-driving prototype without a steering wheel or pedals. It's through these screens the auto will give an idea of what it can "see" of the world around.

"When you see this image for the first time it's quite striking", Dan Ammann, president of GM, told CNBC. The company has said the accidents weren't caused by any of the GM cars. A poll released this week, as Congress hashes out legislation for autonomous vehicles, found that many Americans are concerned about sharing the road with robot cars and want stricter federal oversight. These developments are not without their technological challenges, such as the competitive race to develop the optimal vehicle sensor technology for self-driving vehicles. Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety and the Consumer Federation of America are releasing a poll today that shows "significant and widespread concerns" among the USA public about the development and deployment of self-driving cars.
