Vivo showed the original smartphone with fingerprint scanner in the display

Synaptics under-display fingerprint reader is magic

Considering the timeline set out by vivo, there's a good chance the Chinese company will officially unveil the unannounced smartphone next month at MWC 2018.

This technology will only work for phones that use OLED displays because the sensor looks through the spaces between subpixels from under the panel.

It also means there's no need for a scanner on the rear of the phone.

Vivo hasn't broken any new design ground with this handset though, as it probably wants to ensure that the technology works properly before exploring any potential new form factors.

Vivo had announced in December a year ago that it would be the first company to launch a phone with in-display fingerprint sensor.

The fingerprint sensor has been made by the sensor company Synaptics, and it has been installed beneath the 6-inch OLED display, and that is the screen that you are actually looking at beneath the cover glass. Apart from its highlight in-display fingerprint sensor feature, nothing else is known about the phone as of now.

Most phones use capacitive sensors for their fingerprint readers, which require your finger to have a pulse to be read.

As you touch the screen, the lit-up fingerprint is then reflected into an in-display fingerprint sensor which is then authenticated.

However, it notes, Samsung still dominates global production capacity of AMOLED panels, which will limit the scale of the Android camp's adoption of in-display fingerprint sensing in flagship models.

We demoed the fingerprint scanner and we have to say the near-final solution is solid. The whole setup process took about a minute, and the phone read my fingerprint easily. In order for it to work, the finger has to be illuminated, so that the fingerprint scanner can read the reflections of the finger scan.

Can I see it in action?

Vivo has been toying with in-screen fingerprint sensors for a while now had announced in December that it would be the first company to bring out a smartphone with in-screen fingerprint sensor.

When does the phone launch, and can I get it?

Following a teaser this week, Vivo at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show (CES) unveiled the world's first smartphone to sport an in-display fingerprint sensor provided by Synaptics.

It's worth noting, though, that Vivo doesn't have a presence in some key global markets such as the U.S. and United Kingdom, so if you live in either of these places it's highly unlikely you'll be able to get your hands on the phone.
