Jorge Chavez, chief of Peru's Civil Defense Institute, said at least 65 people were injured, and the death toll could rise.

Prime Minister Mercedes Araoz said at a news conference in Lima that the government would declare a state of emergency in the affected zones to allow for faster reconstruction of roads and homes. The natural disaster struck at 4:18 a.m. ET at a depth of 36.3 kilometres. Its epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean, 25 miles from the town of Acari.

The quake on Sunday initially sparked a tsunami warning for some coasts in Peru and neighbouring Chile, but this was quickly called off. It also says waves are forecast to be less than 0.3 meters for the coasts of Chile.

A strong quake has struck the coast of southern Peru, causing damage to homes, collapsing roads and killing one person.

A 7.3 magnitude natural disaster shook southern Peru on Sunday, killing at least two people and injuring 65 others, the South American country's civil defense agency said.
