Ont. schoolgirl's hijab allegedly cut in scissor attack

Khawlah Noman 11 says a man tried to cut off her hijab while she was walking to school in Toronto

An 11-year-old Muslim girl who told police she was attacked twice by a man who snuck up behind her and cut her hijab while she walked to school, told reporters the man smiled at her before running away.

Khawlah Noman, who studies in the sixth grade, was on her way to school with younger brother when the incident took place.

Spokeswoman Katrina Arrogante says the man cut off the girl's hijab and fled the scene.

Khawlah and her 10-year-old brother, Mohammed, ran away from the man to join a group of children so they would not be alone with him, but became separated at the traffic lights.

Toronto police are investigating reports of a man allegedly cutting off a girl's hijab in the city's east end, Friday, Jan. 12, 2018.

Toronto police lauded Khawlah's quick thinking and response to the attack, with Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu saying she was "very, very smart" for shouting and joining the group of students ahead of her. Sidhu said this is "an isolated incident", such that she has never seen in her 20 years of service.

He's described as a man in his 20s, Asian, medium build, about five-foot-eight-inches and six-foot, with black hair and a moustache.

Addressing her attacker, the girl said: "What you're doing is really wrong, you should not act like this, and especially, I'm a kid".

Sharing his terrible experience, her younger brother said, "I saw my sister, she was frightened". He was wearing black prescription glasses, a black hooded sweater, black trousers and brown gloves, police said.

A spokesperson for the Toronto District School Board said the school where the student belongs is multicultural and inclusive.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the attack, along with other Canadian politicians.

"We are shocked to learn of this assault and we will be working closely with police to offer any assistance that we can", Bird told CP24.

'In the meantime, we're offering support to the impacted student and her family'. "We must stand firm in our support of this young girl who was assaulted simply for wearing a hijab", he wrote in a tweet. "I am so proud to be a Canadian, and I want to give (the attacker) the same message".

"This does not represent who we are", the premier added in a statement posted to Twitter.
