Police chase Greyhound bus after passenger reports threats

Update: Suspect in custody after possible hostage situation on Greyhound bus

According to a news release from Illinois State Police, authorities received a call for a disorderly and possibly armed person on a Greyhound bus on I-94 around 10 p.m., the release said. However, although several squads had their lights and sirens on, the bus did not stop and continued into Kenosha County, still headed toward Chicago.

Vargas-Rosas is in the US illegally, and was previously deported to Mexico in 2012, The Daily Herald reported.

Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputies attempted to get in front of the bus but could not, Schmaling said, so they turned the call over to Racine County.

Stop strips were used to blow out two of the tires and the vehicle eventually came to rest in IL. By the time the bus stopped, the spiked tires were disintegrating, he said. Officials said the suspect lives in Chicago and works in Milwaukee.

The man allegedly implied that he had a weapon but none has been found, Schmaling said.

A suspect is now in custody after a reported hostage situation involving a gunman on a Greyhound bus.

At a Bond Court hearing in Waukegan Sunday, Vargas-Rosas was ordered held without bond in the Lake County jail, with a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, Covelli said.

The suspect was saying "he was gonna kill us, that he was going to put a bullet in our head", passenger Patrick Todd told CBS 2 in Chicago after the almost 40 passengers arrived at Union Station on another vehicle.

Schmaling did not know when Vargas-Rosas was deported to Mexico.

Team members also assisted in evacuating the bus, he said. The bus was being searched Saturday.

The threats were apparently made after an altercation with two passengers on the bus, according to Schmaling.
