Saddier fires record 63 to share SA Open lead

Jordan Spieth drives off the seventh tee during the first round of the Sony Open golf tournament Thursday Jan. 11 2018 in Honolulu

Asked how he would celebrate his maiden European Tour success, Paisley replied: "I'm gonna get mortal [drunk]".

Chase Koepka, the younger brother of U.S. Open champion Brooks, finished with a 71 for 13 under overall and in a tie for seventh. The pair had a one-stroke edge over Chris Paisley of England and two over Bradley Neil of Scotland, South Africa's Erik van Rooyen and Richard Sterne, and Spain's Nacho Elvira.

Former Major title-holders Charl Schwartzel (139) and Ernie Els (141) of South Africa made the cut for the final two rounds.

But it wasn't to be as Paisley became the third Englishman in four years to lift the trophy and the second to cause an upset after Graeme Storm beat Rory McIlroy in extra time last year.

Grace, a South African, had a haywire front nine that included two eagles, two birdies and two bogeys. "Now I've played myself right back into it and I'm really excited going into Sunday".

"At the moment it's weird, I feel like I didn't play incredible".

"It's a great start to 2018", said Grace. But you can nearly go through the motions in practice and then you start a new year feeling rusty and nervous, like last year when I came here and shot eight-over-par and missed the cut.

Koepka matched Grace with halves of 32 and 33 as he recovered from bogeying the first hole of each nine. "I made a par on two which feels like a bogey and made a bogey on five which was bad, too". The only one I was really aggressive with was the second hole. "I hit it well, so I was able to come out and be aggressive off the tee, and if I can get that going, I can keep it up the whole day", he said.

Paisley, the clubhouse leader for much of an opening round played in warm, partly cloudy conditions, birdied seven holes and bogeyed one.

JC Ritchie surged up the leaderboard as a 65 saw him finish outright third, while further down 2011 champion Hennie Otto shot the low round of the day - an eight-under 64 that yielded 10 birdies and two bogeys.

Retief Goosen, a two-time US Open victor, faltered at the last on Friday with a double-bogey six and lost further ground on the field with a one-over 73 to finish at seven under heading into the final round, while Ernie Els carded a two-under 70 to sit 10 shots off the lead at five under.

Grace's front nine was not impressive by his lofty standards as he only managed to make a pair of birdies and an unwanted bogey on the ninth hole.
