Honda Accord Takes North American Car of the Year Award

Auto Show: Press Preview Underway

The 2018 Honda Accord was named vehicle of the Year at the Detroit Auto Show, beating out the Kia Stinger and the Toyota Camry. It will go on sale early this year, Honda News reported.

Larger than models from previous years, the Accord edged out the Toyota Camry and the Kia Stinger for the honor presented in Detroit.

The Accord, which went on sale last fall, is among many revamped auto models hoping to snare buyers as sales fall and SUVs rise.

Last year's winners included the Chevrolet Bolt EV, Honda Ridgeline and Chrysler Pacifica.

The Volvo XC60 is the latest model the auto company has constructed using its new four-cylinder-only concept.

The Truck class proved somewhat controversial this year as the NACTOY committee chose to put two SUVs, the body-on-frame Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, in the truck class against the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, the only actual truck.

"Lincoln is honored to be named the best among such a strong field of competitors", said Kumar Galhotra, president, The Lincoln Motor Company.

The Lincoln Navigator was completely re-engineered for the first time in the model's history.

Sixty U.S. and Canadian automotive journalists serve as judges for the awards program, which patterned itself after the European Car of the Year.

To be eligible for the awards, a vehicle had to be new or substantially changed for the current year.

Organizers accept no advertising, though automakers try to capitalize on the marketing value of the awards.
