'Jumanji' tops the North American box office for a second weekend

Weekend box office The Post opens strong but can’t beat Jumanji

Sony's action adventure comedy film "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" remained atop North American box office, dominating the Martin Luther King holiday weekend with an estimated 27.03 million USA dollars through Sunday.

The Sony tentpole finally toppled runaway Chinese hit The Ex-File 3: The Return of the Exes, which earned $25.3 million in its third frame, bringing its local total to $272 million.

According to studio estimates Sunday, "Jumanji" easily remained the no. 1 film in North America despite an onslaught of new challengers. In just four weeks, the film has grossed an impressive $291.6 million.

Steven Spielberg directs Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in "The Post", a political thriller film about the unlikely partnership between The Washington Post's Katharine Graham, the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee, as they race to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four US presidents.

"The Post", a well-reviewed recounting of the Washington Post's efforts to release the Pentagon Papers that stars Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, took in $18 million in its first week in wide release, good for second place. FOX is hoping to build word of mouth with the goal of gaining potential Oscar attention. "The Commuter" reportedly cost $30 million to make. But Fox added more than 2,000 new locations this weekend.

PADDINGTON 2 finds Paddington happily settled with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens, where he has become a popular member of the community, spreading joy and marmalade wherever he goes.

"Paddington 2" was projected for an opening around $20 million, which would have been a solid follow-up to the $25 million opening its predecessor made in this release slot two years ago. And Henson's "Proud Mary" grossed $10 million.
