Democrat Phil Murphy prepares to change into New Jersey governor

Gov.-elect Murphy takes NJ Transit tour with stops around the state

Murphy, a Democrat and former Wall Street banker who has never held elected office, was sworn in as New Jersey's 56th governor shortly before noon on Tuesday amid the traditional pageantry accompanying the transfer of power in the state capital.

Murphy said New Jersey will "resist every move from President Trump and a misguided congressional leadership" that harms the state.

Murphy has never held political office and earned his fortune, which he used to help win the Democratic nomination previous year, as an executive at Goldman Sachs. And while he said the wealthiest should "pay their fair share", he didn't specifically call on lawmakers to pass him a bill raising taxes on millionaires, a key funding mechanism for his promised policies.

Murphy also said the state must accept the reality of climate change, invest aggressively in renewable energy, and uphold the goals of the Paris Climate Accord. He left office the least popular New Jersey governor in 20 years of Quinnipiac University polling, with 15 percent job approval.

Murphy's wife, Tammy, and their four children joined him on stage as he was sworn in by state Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner.

Former Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver has been sworn in as lieutenant governor of the state.

Murphy also thanked former Christie for his service and praised his work on the opioid crisis, the AP reported. His vision for a "stronger and fairer" state includes reform of the criminal justice system and legalization of marijuana, he said.

New Jersey Second Amendment Society - Our mission is to promote the free exercise of Second Amendment rights within the community and Legislature of New Jersey, to educate the community regarding the enjoyable, safe, and responsible use of firearms, and to engender a sense of camaraderie and fellowship among the members and their families.

Oliver ran with Murphy and replaces Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno. After a successful stint fundraising for Democrats, former President Barack Obama named Murphy ambassador to Germany, where he served from 2009 to 2013. Monday is Republican Gov. Chris Christie's last full day in office.

"As our infrastructure goes, so goes the state", he said, adding New Jersey is the fourth smallest state geographically, and the densest state in the country.

Oliver will head the state's Department of Community Affairs will serve as acting governor whenever Murphy is out of state.
