Turkey to prevent terrorist threat at its southern borders - PM

On Monday Erdogan accused the United States of creating an "army of terror" in Syria, along the border with Turkey, and vowed to crush the us -backed border force.

From the outset of the Syrian civil war, the USA has been on the losing side.

Iran's foreign ministry labelled the US/Kurdish plan as a "clear intervention" in the internal affairs of Syria. Then the USA shifted its focus to defeating the IS and establishing its influence in the country.

To understand the seemingly imminent offensives, it's important to understand Turkey's relations with the Kurds, and who some of the main players are in the Syrian conflict.

Konig, who features on United Nations and U.S. blacklists of risky militants, was captured last month and is being held in a Kurdish camp with her three young children along with several other French women. Most cities and population centres, including the Mediterranean coast, are controlled by the regime, while rebels and al-Qaeda-linked jihadists run Idlib province (which is now under attack by regime-Russian forces).

Beyond counterterrorism, though, Tillerson outlined a much broader mission for US forces in Syria than when Trump first entered office with an nearly singular focus on defeating terrorists.

Akar's remarks followed the announcement from the USA military command in Baghdad over the weekend, that the U.S.is going to organize and train a "Border Security Force" in northeastern Syria. But the move carries great risks.

Turkey accuses the YPG of merely being the Syrian offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has waged a rebellion in the Turkish southeast for more than three decades and is regarded as a terror group by Ankara and its Western allies.

While acknowledging that the US-led coalition does not have an official explanation yet, Defense Department spokesman Eric Pahon told Business Insider that the United States has "maintained full accountability and transparency with the Turkish government" and "are keenly aware of the security concerns of our coalition partner Turkey". They were hostile to each other, but never fought against each other, barring some isolated incidents. Rather, they emphasise on autonomy and a federated post-war state structure.

A Turkish military statement said Gen Hulusi Akar and intelligence chief Hakan Fidan would meet with Russia's military chief, Valery Gerasimov, to discuss regional security issues, the latest developments in Syria and ongoing peace efforts for the war-torn country. But the latest US plans pre-empt any such future deal. There are now some 2,000 USA troops in Syria, mainly training local forces to root out remaining extremist strongholds.
