Day 6 Snapshot from the Australian Open

Simona Halep made it through to the fourth round after beating American Lauren Davis

In the tenth anniversary of the latest finish ever at Australian Open, Simona Halep won the clash of the tournament. So long. I never played a third set so long.

For Davis, as discouraging as it might be to have nothing to show for all that hard work, it was a very good tournament. "My ankle is, I don't know how it is because I don't feel it anymore!"

"But it was nice to win this match, to be on this court and to be in the fourth round of this tournament".

Davis required a medical timeout at 11-all after telling the chair umpire her toenail had fallen off. I'm really happy I could stay and win it. At 5-foot-6, Halep is among the shorter players on tour, but Davis is listed at 5-2.

However, the American was at the centre of a scary incident during the third set of the match on Rod Laver Arena.

With the temperatures a manageable 26 Celsius (79 Farenheit) at Melbourne Park after two days of oven-like conditions, the Russian was no match for the German, flopping 6-1, 6-3 in a battle of the former champions. The scheme repeated itself at 8-7, then Davis reached a turning point as she held to love to lead 10-9.

In a match dominated by serve, Pliskova fired down 11 aces and offered up only one break point opportunity as she reached the last 16 for the second successive year. Davis saved five break points in the 23rd game but she looking increasingly suffering. Maybe when she had the match balls, maybe I would have lost it.

The American, 24, said she modelled herself on the Romanian.

Having climbed to the top of the rankings after a 2016 that brought glory in Melbourne and at the US Open, Kerber plummeted after failing to build on those triumphs.

"I definitely felt that way", said Keys, who made a run to the Open semi-finals as a teenager in 2015. "After this match I think tomorrow is gonna be worse, but I just push, push myself, and we will see what's gonna happen". Fourth seed Zverev lost 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 3-6, 0-6.

The wait for a home women's champion will extend into a 41st year after Barty went down 6-4 6-2 to the unseeded Osaka.

The Belarusian, carrying an 18-7 career mark against opponents from France before the match, including a 15-4 record on hardcourts, pushed the match to a decider.

Keys, who missed last year's Australian Open after undergoing surgery on her injured left wrist, will next play the victor of Saturday's match between Aliaksandra Sasnovich and No. 8 seed Caroline Garcia.

Sixth seed Pliskova also had a tough test, beating fellow Czech Lucie Safarova 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.
