Kidnapped Americans, Canadians Rescued in Nigeria, Police Say

International Affairs conscious of report of two Canadians kidnapped in Nigeria

The four foreigners were rescued in the Jere area of the Kagarko local government area of Kaduna state, he said.

The Kaduna State Police Command has said that the two Americans and two Canadians that were abducted on Tuesday by gunmen have been released. All four were said to be in fairly good condition, Aliyu said.

They have been transported to Nigeria's capital, Abuja.

"We rescued the two Americans and two Canadian citizens, three males and one female in fairly good health around 7:30 a.m. today, January 20".

The police commissioner said one person was arrested in connection with the incident, adding that the police were on the trail of the remaining suspects to bring them to justice. During the ambush, their two police escorts were killed in a gun battle, Aliya said.

The foreigners had visited Kafanchan and Kaura in Kaduna state and were heading back to Abuja at the time of the ambush. Last February, two German archaeologists were abducted in the region, though were later freed. Three were released after negotiations, but the other, Ian Squire, was killed.

Global Affairs Canada spokesman John Babcock said it was aware of the reports of the kidnapping of two Canadian citizens, indicating a possible dual nationality.

The foreign nationals were members of an investment team for a solar power project in Kafanchan district in Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State Police spokesman Mukhtar Aliyu told CNN.
