SnapChat partners with its biggest rival Facebook

Snapchat update lets you share Stories with people who don't even use the app – here's how to use it

While Facebook and Instagram have copied Snapchat's Stories feature, neither offer support for sharing that content on other platforms. When the update releases, users will see a special icon next to the person's name if they take a screenshot or record your Stories.

This marks parent company Snap Inc.'s first practical partnership with its social media competitors, CNBC said, and is a move meant to spark growth for an app that has struggled to attract new users and drive revenue since going public in March a year ago.

The new feature will be available to Snap users who have the newly redesigned app starting on Wednesday and is scheduled to become available to more users as the redesign rolls out over the next few weeks.

Users will also be able to send a link to their Story to friends and family not on the service, with the Story then watched on a new media player on the Snapchat website.

To share a Story, you'll press and hold on tiles in Discover. You will be able to share your stories via text messages, iMessages, email, etc., by grabbing the URL.

Finally, you can share Search Stories, which are stories based around terms you search for in the app - like "puppies" or "football".

Being redirected to another web page isn't the most glamorous process, but it does open the door considerably in regards to who can see the content you're sharing on Snapchat. Giving users tools to help identify who's harassing or potentially preying on them is the step in the right direction to curb creepy social media activity.

Official Stories will be available outside of Snapchat for 24 hours.

More than 10 million Brits use Snapchat every day, which accounts for around 25% of all the smartphone users in the country.

Search Stories are another way to discover user generated Snaps on Snapchat.

Search Stories will be available outside of Snapchat for 30 days.
