Donald Trump apologizes for retweeting far-right British group

Donald Trump Davos Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan has frequently spoken about his friendship with Donald Trump - and now Piers has finally interviewed the US President in what was his first worldwide interview since taking office.

"If you're telling me they're awful racist people, I would certainly apologize if you'd like me to do that", he told Good Morning Britain's Piers Morgan on Thursday during an interview on conducted in Davos, Switzerland, on the sidelines of the annual World Economic Forum. "I don't want to be involved with people... but you're telling me about these people, 'cause I know nothing about these people", Trump said.

Afterward, Morgan - a man who is publicly critical of Trump yet remains a longtime friend - said that while Trump was reluctant to apologize, he believes Trump's comments were genuine.

"Perhaps it was a big story in Britain, perhaps it was a big story in the UK, but in the United States it wasn't a big story. I am the least racist person that anybody is going to meet".

Trump said he retweeted the messages, which contained the titles "Muslim migrant beats up Dutch boy on crutches!" and "Islamist mob pushes teenage boy off roof and beats him to death!" because he is a "big believer" in combating radical Islamic terrorism.

Speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump said he knew nothing about Britain First, a fringe group which opposes what it calls the "Islamization" of the U.K. The president added that he was not endorsing the group.

May said in a statement that it was "wrong for the president to have done this", but she didn't rescind her offer for Trump to visit.

Donald Trump is ready to apologize for retweeting anti-Muslim videos in November, reports BBC.

"Then here's what's fair", Trump responded.

Trump cancelled a ceremony to open the new U.S. Embassy in London a year ago amid reports that his visit would spark protests. When you do your own tweeting, or you do your own social media, it's fine.

His chat with Morgan was the first global TV interview with Donald Trump since he took office. "Okay? I don't know anything about what you're even talking about with white supremacy or white supremacists ... you wouldn't want me to condemn a group that I know nothing about". We will come to your defence if anything should happen, which hopefully will never happen.

The full interview will air in Britain on Sunday. "But I am a tremendous supporter of the United Kingdom".
