Ryan Palmer takes lead, Tiger Woods makes cut

Donaldson narrowly avoided losing his tour card last year but is on song in Dubai

That was projected as the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open.

While once there was a time he expected to win whenever he put a peg into the ground - he's accumulated 79 PGA Tour titles and 14 majors - Woods is looking to gradually build up his game with each practice round, practice session and PGA Tour event before heading down Magnolia Lane in search of a fifth green jacket.

He said he was delighted to be playing without pain after spinal fusion surgery last April but the day was not without its frustrations.

With the cut line at one-under par, Woods had a lot of work to do if he wanted to play the weekend.

The Offaly golfer shot an opening round of 3 under par on the North Course which saw him finish the opening round in a tie for 15th place.

"It was a hard putt", Woods told reporters.

Tiger Woods has made the cut at Torrey Pines with a late birdie taking him into the weekend.

Tiger Woods was holding decently steady at the Farmers Insurance Open, staying at even-par on his second day.

He poured in an eight footer for par, but failed to repeat the trick for birdie on the 202 yard 12th after a brilliant seven iron - easily his best shot so far. He kept his patience, chipped in for eagle at the turn, and then finished with a handsome approach to 12 feet on the par-5 eighth and a 20-foot birdie putt on the ninth. Equally important was a par save on No. 6, where his flop-shot wedge from deep rough stopped four feet from the cup.

He laid up in the rough and two-putted for par at the par-five 10th from about 40 feet.

It's been 888 days since Tiger Woods made his last cut, and he had to birdie his final hole today to break the drought. "I've got two young kids; it's time to have some family time with them for a couple of months and it was great", said Donaldson, a three-time victor on the European Tour.

The importance was not lost on Woods, who has missed just 17 cuts worldwide - 16 on the PGA Tour - in his career.

Tiger Woods is plodding through a frustrating PGA Tour season debut in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Woods made the turn at 2-over 38 Friday on the North Course, which was toughened up during a recent renovation. At the age of 42 and more than three years since his last victory on the European Tour, the veteran Welshman is 13 under par for 36 holes and the leader in the Emirates clubhouse.

But he couldn't get out of trouble at the par-four 13th, his fourth hole of the day, after another tee shot went left into a scrub hazard.

Finau birdied his opening two holes to set the tone for his round, and he wound up with nine birdies, the last one from 35 feet to take the lead.

But another wiild drive on the 13th - again missing way to the left - forced Woods to take a penalty drop. That's why he spent extra time during Tuesday's practice round and Wednesday's pro-am chipping and putting on and around each green.
