Caroline Wozniacki beat world No.1 Simona Halep in the Australian Open women's singles final on Saturday to win her maiden Grand Slam title.

Wozniacki fell backward onto the court and shed tears of joy when Halep, serving at 4-5, 30-40 in the third set, netted a backhand on the only match point of the stunning 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4 battle of attrition that lasted 2 hours, 49 minutes on Saturday night.

Second-seed Wozniacki, who was presented with the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Trophy by Billie Jean King, said: "I'm just taking a second here to hug Daphne".

The result ensured Wozniacki swiped Halep's World No.1 ranking, six years after losing it at the 2012 Australian Open.

A teenage prodigy, Wozniacki reached her first grand slam final at the US Open in 2009 and another in NY in 2014 but lost first to Kim Clijsters and then Serena Williams.

After 126 women's matches at the Australian Open, it boils down to one match - Simona Halep, against one of our outright selections, Caroline Wozniacki.

"I knew going into the match that one of us was going to be extremely excited and very happy, and the other one was going to be very disappointed, very sad", she said.

"I fight and have many years to go, so hopefully will face another challenge like today".

Trailing 40-15 in that game-one point from a Kerber victory-Halep hit big, including a victor.

Wozniacki trailed by a break deep in the third set, too, against Halep before claiming the final three games. Just when it looked like the Dane was going to take the third set to a title, breaking Halep early on, the Romanian broke back.

Her 2011 Australian Open semi-final loss to Li Na, when she had a match point on serve is an albatross even now.

Hampered by an ankle issue throughout the tournament, Halep revealed she had also injured the tendons in both her feet during a gruelling fortnight at Melbourne Park. When the diminutive Romanian returned, she kept the points short, punching victor after winner on her way to closing out the set. But I served pretty well in the service games, and then I got confident again. "At the same time, I think it really was a great momentum shift for me going further into the tournament after that".

"He said that I've been the best mentally and physically, as well, fighting until the end". I think it will be a very close match where the finest margins will decide.

"From being nearly out of the tournament to sitting here with the Australian Open trophy, it's unbelievable", Wozniacki said. It's been quite a turnaround, something I'm very proud of.

"I've been through a few injuries".
