Super blue blood moon eclipse on the cards

Lunar eclipse main

Another occurred on January 1 and the final will occur on January 31, 2018.

On top of it all, the January 31 full moon is also a considered a blue moon. That means it sometimes comes closer to us than usual.

A "supermoon" is the popular term for a perigee full moon - a full moon that happens when the moon is at its perigee (closest to the earth in its monthly orbit). The next time the trifecta occurs where it can be seen in America won't be for half a millennia, until August 31, 2528. However when the moon the furthest away from the earth it is out there, 252,000 miles.

What is a blue moon?

Finally, to add the cherry on top, this will also be a supermoon. The moon tends to appear larger to the human eye at this point, although no one really knows why. Because of this, it appears bigger and brighter. Supermoons by themselves aren't that rare - about a quarter of all full moons are supermoons.

While writing an article in a popular astronomy magazine, amateur astronomer James Hugh Pruett mistook the original definition as being the second full moon in one calendar month. "If last month's Full Moon were a 16.0 inch pizza, then this month's "Super" moon would be 16.1 inches". When this happens, as it will on January 31, the event is commonly referred to as a "blue" moon. This year, however, we'll be spoiled.

The fullest the moon in CNY will be when it sets at 7:10 a.m. January 31.

A "blood moon" is pictured from Gosford, Australia, north of Sydney, October 8, 2014. As the moon passes through the shadow of the Earth, it takes on a unique red tint. This can occur only when the sun, Earth, and moon are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle.

An astronaut on the moon would see a red ring around the entire Earth - all of the planet's sunrises and sunsets occurring at once. Thus, some are calling this event a SUPER BLUE-BLOOD MOON! "For this eclipse, much of the US will be racing against sunrise".

"So your best opportunity if you live in the East is to head outside about 6:45 a.m. and get to a high place to watch the start of the eclipse - make sure you have a clear line of sight to the horizon in the west-northwest, opposite from where the Sun will rise", Johnston said in the release.

If you're not looking to shell out dough for a flight across the country, don't give up hope just yet.

A supermoon in eclipse is pictured behind Glastonbury Tor in Glastonbury, U.K., September 27, 2015.

The partial eclipse will span about three and a half hours, starting at 3:48 a.m. PST, and will be visible over much more of the world-a slightly darker and off-color supermoon. When this happens, the only light that reaches the moon will be filtered through Earth's atmosphere, stripping out the blue wavelengths and casting the moon red.

Though not quite astronomical odds, the chances of all three events occurring together are less than, well, once in blue moon - which incidentally occurs about once every 2.7 years, said Jason Aufdenberg, a professor of physics and astronomy at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. "You don't even need any special equipment-just step outside and look up".
