J&K police charge Army unit, Major with murder

Youth killed in Army firing

Suhail Lone and Javid Bhat, both in their 20s, were killed when security forces opened fire on protesters in Ganaupora village in south Kashmir's Shopian district on Saturday afternoon. After the tragic death of two Kashmiri youth, the Valley remained tensed and paralysed after a shutdown was called in by Kashmiri separatists.

A state government spokesman said the chief minister expressed deep anguish and sorrow over the death of the two civilians and ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Police said due to stone-pelting some Army soldiers sustained injuries.

Internet speed has also been curtailed in Kashmir and train services between Banihal and Baramulla have been suspended for today. Restrictions were imposed in parts of Srinagar.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has, meanwhile, asked Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to direct the Army to avoid such incidents, as they hamper the political and peace process.

The residents of Ganowpora have claimed that the troops opened fire onto a group of youth after "few stones" were hurled at their vehicles. A major, who led the army personnel at the time of the incident, was also mentioned in the FIR, officials said.

A senior police officer confirmed that an FIR was filed at the Shopian police station against the army's 10th Garhwal unit.

Two youths were allegedly killed and nine others injured in army firing at Ganovpora in Shopian yesterday when a stone-pelting mob targeted a convoy. The crowd surrounded an isolated portion of the convoy consisting of four vehicles. "The violent crowd further closed in towards the vehicles and attempted to set them on fire", he added. The mob tried to lynch the individual and snatch his weapon.
