Man sucked into MRI machine dies, 3 held

The family said Maru had gone inside the machine but he had to be pulled out by force due to the strong magnetic power of the machine

In an unfortunate incident, a 32-year-old man lost his life in a hospital in India's Mumbai city after being sucked into a Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine (MRI) on Saturday evening (27 January).

However, the machine had been switched on, and witnesses reported Mr Maru was pulled towards the machine with "great force". The relative, a senior citizen, had an oxygen cylinder attached to her bed when the duo entered the MRI room. "The doctor as well as the technician didn't say anything", Solanki reportedly said. The police filed a First Information Report against Dr Siddhant Shah, ward boy Vitthal Chavan and ward attendant Sunita Surve under Section 304A (death caused by negligence).

Maru had gone to the hospital for one of his relatives MRI scan, another officer said. Representational ImageThe grieving family of the deceased has blamed the hospital for severe negligence.

"He (Maru) was admitted into MRI room with an oxygen tank when no metal items are allowed". Metal objects are supposed to be removed when an MRI is in use.

"When we told him that metallic things aren't allowed inside an MRI room, he said it's fine, we do it every day". After he was pulled from the machine he was rushed to the emergency ward, but died within minutes. The ring finger of his left hand was also crushed by the machine. It seems that when the cylinder got pulled by the machine's magnetic force, oxygen started leaking.

Announcing the compensation, BJP MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha said the three employees had been suspended and an inquiry has been initiated against them by the hospital. Since Maru was stuck with his hand holding the cylinder, he inhaled the liquid oxygen, which caused him to become unconscious. The hospital's CCTV footage will be looked into, he said.

Agripada police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the hospital administration. During the process, the patient is placed inside the MRI machine and must stay very still to prevent the image from blurring.

Protesting the hospital's apathy and lack of help following the incident, members of Maru's family occupied the office of Dean Dr. Ramesh Bharmal in Nair Hospital on Sunday morning and refused to leave until action was taken against the doctor and the hospital staff.
