Closer means brighter. NASA estimates Wednesday's moon will be about 14 percent closer and up to 30 percent brighter than your typical moon.
Lucky for skywatchers, January 31 just happens to be a full moon, and not just a regular full Supermoon at that.
A "super blue blood moon" is the combination of three lunar events - a super moon, a blue moon and a blood moon. Due to the calendar quirk, this tends to happen once every 2.7 years or so, which is more uncommon rather than the "once in a blue moon" phrase which usually get tagged to rare events.
Raymundo said the cosmic events can be observed on Wednesday evening, with the total lunar eclipse reaching its maximum eclipse from 8:51 p.m.to 10:07 p.m., for a total of one hour and 16 minutes.
The event will be most noticeable starting with the partial eclipse beginning at 4:48 a.m.
It's a rare astronomical trifecta Wednesday morning. Unlike solar eclipses, a lunar eclipse is not unsafe to watch and the eclipse may last for hours and be seen in many parts of the world. For the eastern USA and Canada, a clear view will be limited as the Moon sets and the Sun rises during the early stages of the eclipse.
The early bird gets to witness a total lunar eclipse this week.

"So if you live in Kansas City or Chicago, your best viewing will be from about 6:15 until 6:30 a.m.", said Gordon Johnston, program executive and lunar blogger at NASA Headquarters in Washington. It occurs when the moon becomes full while near the closest point in the moon's orbit around the earth. On Wednesday night there will be a full moon, which is the second full moon in the same month. But the super blue moon will still be passing by, so it'll be worth stepping outside for a look all the same.
The term blood moon comes from the sometimes copper red tint of the moon during a lunar eclipse.
"The further west you are, not just in North Carolina but in the country, the better view you'll have".

UNO's Mallory Kountze Planetarium does not have any public events planned for the lunar events, she said, mainly because special equipment is not required, it is a morning event, and winter mornings can be extremely cold.
