Kenya: Raila Odinga Swears Self People's President

"The motive was clearly political", Mr Musyoka said, describing the 1am blast as "shocking".

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has taken an unofficial oath to be "sworn in" as the nation's people's president.

He said they are investigating why the Government resorted to such actions, adding that if it is because of NASA "oathing" coverage the State was overreacting. "There was no threat to security", said Macharia Gaitho, a veteran journalist and political analyst.

A huge crowd of Odinga's supporters gathered Tuesday at Nairobi's main park to attend the event.

On Monday, Linus Kaikai, chairman of the Kenya Editors Guild, said senior editors had been summoned by the authorities and warned not to cover the event or risk being shut down.

There are fears that the government may have revoked the licenses of the popular TV stations to punish them for going against its directive.

Mr Odinga held his own "inauguration" after claiming he was the rightful victor of last year's election. "Today is a one stop towards doing away with electoral autocracy and to establishing proper democracy in the country", said Odinga.

"I Raila Amolo Odinga, in full realisation of the high calling, assume the office of the People's President of the Republic of Kenya", he said in the brief and chaotic ceremony, prompting the sea of people to erupt with joy.

Hours later, the government outlawed the opposition's National Resistance Movement, with Interior Minister Fred Matiangi declaring it an organized criminal group.

Rights advocates accuse President Uhuru Kenyatta of veering toward dictatorship and accuse his administration of continuously violating Kenya's constitutionally guaranteed freedoms including that of assembly and freedom expression. After the Supreme Court overturned the election results because of irregularities and called for a rerun, Odinga boycotted the repeat election, accusing authorities of failing to ensure a fair vote.

Odinga has refused to accept Kenyatta's victory, which came after last year's deeply-divisive election season in which rights activists say at least 92 people were killed.

American officials met with Odinga and members of his party to warn them against proceeding with his plans for an inauguration, but they proceeded anyway, stating that Odinga was the true victor of the August election and the October re-vote was entirely invalid. The Kenyan electoral commission disputed the opposition's claims and said their data was faked.

Police officers who had earlier kept watch and declared Uhuru Park Grounds out of bound have left the place allowing the National Supper Alliance (NASA) supporters to settle as they wait for Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka to arrive and take oath of office as president and deputy president respectively.
