Vaping causes cancer, says study

Vaping and e-cigarettes have gained considerable popularity as a less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes

But the evidence is pointing towards them being far less harmful than tobacco.

This appears to be the main cause for concern moving forward, as Jasmine Just from Cancer Research UK points out that other research has shown that "those who make a complete switch from smoking tobacco to e-cigarettes can significantly reduce their exposure to key harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke", as more light continues to be shed on the findings.

For their experiment, Tang and his colleagues exposed laboratory mice to e-cigarette vapor, which contains both nicotine and liquid solvents.

The researchers said that if the findings will be confirmed in future studies, it could mean that e-cigarettes, always been considered to be the safer alternative to traditional cigarette and tobacco products, also carry cancer risk through the nicotine that they deliver. The findings also support bids to regulate e-cigarettes based on their tobacco-like effects, such as the FDA's former approach.

During the tests, some mice were exposed to smokes emanating from e-cigarettes.

E-cigarettes may carry health risks, but these are nowhere near the risks of continuing to smoke tobacco.

At the same time, the report also found that their use among younger people increased the risk of them taking up conventional smoking when they're older.

As the authors admit, though, tobacco smoke is chock full of other nasty chemicals that can cause cancer along with other health problems, such as emphysema.

Researchers continue to conduct studies that investigate the possible benefits and dangers of using e-cigarettes.

It would have been nice if this study had taken the extra step of exposing mice to tobacco smoke as well, and then compared them head-to-head against the mice that inhaled e-cigarette vapor, said Anthony Alberg. Details of the study are reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The research found that vaping does include fewer cancer causing chemicals than normal smoking but vapers could be at greater risk of lung and bladder cancers and heart diseases.

Last week a major United States report into the health effects of e-cigarettes found that vaping might be useful to help people quit smoking.

Additionally, a study published by the American Association for Cancer Research determined that switching from cigarettes to e-cigarettes may lead to a reduction in the amount of nicotine consumed, and an increase in will to quit smoking.
