Middle School Shoot Was Not Intentional

A gunshot that went off in a Los Angeles middle school classroom on Thursday, hitting two students, was accidentally discharged from inside a girl's backpack, Los Angeles police said Friday. The charge came after one of the girl's classmates said that she was sobbing after the gun was sacked and told him repeatedly, "I didn't mean it". The bullet went through the wrist of the girl and struck the boy in the head, the LAPD said. "I anticipate he'll make a full recovery".

The 15-year-old boy was shot in the temple and is "extremely lucky" that the bullet missed vital structures, doctors say. She was charged with negligent discharge of a firearm, police said.

Sky5 aerial video showed two officers escorting an apparently handcuffed female off the campus and to an awaiting LAPD patrol vehicle, where she was placed in the back seat.

An LAPD spokesman confirmed that they have one suspect, a female student, in custody. They've since been treated and released from the hospital.

At the front gate of the school, McNair said she was directed to the back, which was blocked off. "They thought it was a fake gun".

"There were numerous kids that ran and other kids that may have left the classroom", Zipperman said.

She texted her 14-year-old son, Johnny Romero, whose number was listed under "Johnny baby", and asked him if was OK. Then, everybody started to panic, the sister told Lopez.

None of the identities of those who were injured have been released.

"It was really close to her", Lopez said. Police rushed to the scene and conducted room searches at the campus.

The determination capped a frantic day at Salvador B. Castro Middle School in downtown Los Angeles and corroborated what some students told reporters after the lockdown was lifted and they were reunited with parents on the school's athletic field. "I'm saddened that this kind of bad event is becoming far too common". "We want to take our children home", Gonzalez said. A hotline has also been set up for those that cannot get to the location in person, and can be reached by dialing 213-241-1000.

A driver was killed in a car-to-car shooting in the Jefferson Park area of Los Angeles early Saturday, and authorities are searching for the man's killer.
