Bill Belichick characteristically bristly, cryptic when asked about Malcolm Butler's benching

New England Patriots Malcolm Butler breaks up a pass to New York Jets Robby Anderson during the first half of an NFL football game Sunday Oct. 15 2017 in East Rutherford N.J

After the game Sunday night, Belichick had said it wasn't a disciplinary decision.

Now one day after the Patriots' Super Bowl loss, we are not much closer to learning the details behind Belichick's odd coaching decision. "It kind of turned out that way, and the game with the way it went and some of the situations that came up, that was just kind of the way it went", he said.

Matchups are important, but it is hard to believe that Butler couldn't have helped the Patriots.

Belichick and owner Robert Kraft are also scheduled to meet to clear the air over the trade of Jimmy Garoppolo that left the Patriots without a successor to 40-year-old Tom Brady at quarterback.

Belichick was asked Monday to explain Butler's benching for emotionally invested fans who feel an emptiness that the cornerback didn't play in New England's 41-33 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

They mystery surrounding his benching may never be solved, but Brandon Browner, a former New England Patriots cornerback who won a Super Bowl with the team, the benching had something to do with marijuana. You make the decision to give us the best chance to win. "I'm sure other players felt the same way". He knows how Patriots players feel about Butler's benching.

If you're going to go down, you may as well at least go down with your best players on the field.

Why was Malcolm Butler benched for Super Bowl 52? "I don't know what it was".

It includes the caption, "A locker room was divided pre game, most yds ever given in up in a SB game, and your best defender over the past 3 seasons".

"The guy has played a lot of football, so to not be out there I'm sure crushed him", Patriots safety Devin McCourty said.

Another is defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, who was hired as the head coach of the Detroit Lions on Monday.

"Very frustrating", Rowe said. "I don't know. But I could have changed that game".

"I appreciate the question, but it would be a much longer discussion", Belichick said. "He wants to be out there, so I'm not surprised he was emotional". "It is what it is", Butler told ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Compounding Butler's frustration was that he heads into the off-season as a restricted free agent and thus may have played his last game as a Patriot.
