Gutsy Woodland rises to Phoenix challenge

Gary Woodland beat Chez Reavie in the Phoenix Open playoff

In March past year, when expecting twins his wife had a miscarriage and the couple lost a baby, whilst the other baby was born 10 weeks premature.

He began the final round at TPC Scottsdale in the chasing pack but came through with a glorious 64 to beat Chez Reavie by a single shot. "My wife kind of surprised me with him", Woodland said. "I just didn't get it going early, and I don't know what to say".

"The long hitters, when you drive it well, it's a different golf course", said Woodland's caddie, Brennan Little, who used to caddie for Mike Weir. Hopefully, its the start of something special.”.

After beating Chez Reavie on the first playoff hole of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Woodland's wife, Gabby, brought baby boy Jaxson out to his victorious father, just seven months after he was born 10 weeks premature in a hard pregnancy for the family.

But Reavie closed with back-to-back birdies to force sudden death.

He fired a seven-under 67 in Sunday's final round to finish at 18-under for the tournament.

It was the third victory of the 33-year-old Woodland's PGA Tour career, but it had been almost five years since his previous title, at the 2013 Reno-Tahoe Open.

"I couldn't wait for 2018 to start", said Woodland, who somehow made it to the Tour Championship last season.

A record crowd of 700,000 people attended the event. On Saturday, 216,818 jammed the grounds, the biggest turnout in golf history.

Ollie Schniederjans (65) and Brendan Steele (67) tied for third at 15 under. Very noisy. Players such as Fowler embrace it, as does Phil Mickelson, who looked like a possible victor when he birdied the 15th, 16th and 17th, but then came a awful double-bogey on the final hole which dropped him back into a tie for fifth place.

The 47-year-old Hall of Famer tied for fifth at 14 under after a 69.

Third-round leader Rickie Fowler (73) and second-ranked Jon Rahm (72) were six strokes back at 12 under. I have been playing well for a while now and was really in control of all parts of my game all day long. "I don't know if that put me at ease or what, but I definitely put four good rounds together this week". "I felt like I needed to birdie the last two". Needing to eagle the par-4 18th to pull even with Woodland, he made double-bogey to finish T5. Woodland can get used to celebrating a win with family.

He went on to fire five birdies on the back nine at to claim the €400,930 winner's cheque and a 119,320-point lead over Tommy Fleetwood at the top of the Race to Dubai. "I've played well on them in the past, and I'm hoping to build on this week's performance".
