U.S. conducts airstrikes against Syrian pro-regime forces after ‘unprovoked attack’

US coalition strike in Syria is an ‘act of aggression’ – Russian senator

The Euphrates River, flowing through Northeastern Syria, serves as a demarcation line between the USA backed SDF and Russian Federation and Iran backed pro regime forces believed to be active around the city of Deir el-Zour. A coalition official told Reuters that the attacking forces were "likely seeking to seize oil fields in Khsham that had been a major source of revenue for Daesh [ISIS] from 2014-2017". The river has acted as a "deconfliction line" between Syrian government forces and US -backed SDF units in some areas of Syria.

In a statement, the USA -led military coalition tasked with battling the Islamic State called the attack southeast of the city of Deir Ezzour in eastern Syria "unprovoked". Nevertheless, the official said the USA is looking into whether Russian-affiliated forces may have been involved.

The United States maintains about 2,000 troop in Syria, mostly working with the estimated 50,000 Syrian Democratic Forces.

One Syrian rebel soldier was wounded but no USA forces were killed or wounded, according to NPR's Tom Bowman, who is reporting from elsewhere in Syria.

Neither U.S. officials nor the U.S. -backed coalition have offered details on the identity of attacking forces.

Syrian state news agency SANA, citing an army statement said its air defence units "destroyed most of" the Israeli missiles.

In defense of coalition and partner forces, officials said, the coalition conducted strikes against attacking forces to repel the act of aggression against partners engaged in the mission to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The state Al-Ikhbariyah TV said there were reports that dozens were killed. The official clarified that the action "was taken in self-defense" after about "20 to 30 artillery and tank rounds landed within 500 meters" of the SDF's headquarters.

The U.S.is looking at whether Russian contractors might have been involved in a Wednesday attack on U.S. fighters and their partners, according to CNN.
