WH Plays Down Trump's Ask For Military Parade: 'Nothing Has Been Decided'

France defense budget increase between 2019 and 2025

The United States has previously held military parades to mark the end of wars, most recently in 1991 after the the Gulf War.

President Trump watches French troops march in a parade in Paris for Bastille Day on July 14, 2017.

Mr. Trump has now told the military to make his wishes a reality.

The president's wish, first expressed months ago, seems to have gone from a "seemingly abstract desire" to something closer to a presidential directive at a meeting between Trump and top generals last month, according to The Washington Post. "This is being worked at the highest levels of the military", the official was quoted as saying by the daily.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, asked about criticisms that the parade might resemble displays organized by authoritarian regimes, said it was too early to "start weighing in on whether or not we think certain things are appropriate, when nothing has been decided and it's literally in a brainstorming session". "He has asked the Department of Defense to explore a celebration at which all Americans can show their appreciation", Sanders said.

No White House official has been in contact with Bowser, she told a reporter Wednesday. Critics have suggested that the parade is essentially a giant wobbly megaphone to say, "Look at how strong we (and I) are", as The Washington Post's Rick Noack shared in an analysis. Municipal officials in D.C. have not been informed about the parade plans.

And what best way to honour the U.S. service members on America's biggest day on July 4.

USA media report that Veterans Day on November 11th or Independence Day on July 4th are possible dates for the parade.

Peters added that, in addition to the massive logistical task, holding a military parade takes troops away from their training, costing the Pentagon a sizable sum.

Fresno veteran John Schuler helped organize the city's Veterans' Day parade. Every dictator from Mussolini to Hitler to Stalin to Kim Jung-un has presided over military parades.

The nation is going to spend tens of millions of dollars transporting tanks and missiles and blimps to Washington, D.C., parade them down Pennsylvania Avenue, and then send them back to their home bases.

Though the USA has held a few military parades throughout its history, Slate points out that the distinction is that these events were held in celebration after successfully winning a war, such as World War I, World War II and the Spanish-American War.

"That military may come marching down Pennsylvania Avenue", he said in the interview. "That's not who we are, it's kind of cheesy, and I think shows weakness quite frankly".
