Durham University student 'crushed to death' outside nightclub

Olivia had been queuing outside Missoula nightclub in the city when a barrier made of glass and mental reportedly toppled over at around 11.50pm, she received severe head injuries as a result and tragically died at the scene.

Tragic Olivia Burt, 20, was killed last night outside Missoula in Durham city centre.

First-aiders tried to save her life but the 20-year-old, from Hampshire, died at the scene.

Missoula's Wednesday-evening event, Game Over, is described by the club as Durham's biggest student night.

"In the end they put a barrier in front of the people at the front, who had been slowly moving forward due to being pushed from behind".

Chris Atherton, the senior high-performance manager of the Royal Yachting Association, paid tribute to Burt's "drive, determination and good sportsmanship" as a sailor. She was part of the British Sailing team in the European Championships.

"People were barging to get in".

He said: "There was a fair bit of panic".

A metal barrier collapsed and fell on top of Olivia, leaving her struck underneath as "people just piled on top of her", according to horrified eyewitnesses.

He tried to give her CPR when she lost consciousness before paramedics arrived, it was alleged.

'My thoughts are with Olivia's family and friends, may you rest in peace'.

Another student, called Emily, who was in the club at the time, told how those inside where evacuated following the incident.

"I waited for some friends for about half an hour and the scene was just very bad".

"There were about 600 people inside the club". My friend was pulling people off her but there were too many. "I've never seen tragedy like that before".

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: 'Officers are investigating the death of a student.

Safety and security consultant Tony O'Brien said: "Crowd safety doesn't begin inside your club".

Eyewitness reports recount overcrowding and a sense of panic outside the venue.

"We continue to assist police and the company who provide our door staff to fully understand what led to this bad accident".

A large floral tribute was placed outside Missoula, formerly a Slug and Lettuce pub, which opened in September 2016 after a £385,000 investment.

"You will appreciate that I am unable to share further details given the ongoing Police investigation".

"My thoughts go out to her family at this tragic time".
