Man Utd's Sanchez accepts suspended sentence for tax fraud

Alexis Sanchez gets 16-month prison term for tax offences in Spain

Manchester United enjoyed record shirt sales in January thanks to the arrival of Alexis Sanchez, after suffering a £21.1million half-year loss at the end of 2017.

"The trade generated some interesting social media stats".

Woodward said not only had Sanchez smashed United records, but the social media interactions that followed his signing far outweighed those concerning Neymar's world-record move to PSG from Barcelona.

There has been speculation Man United broke the bank to fit Sanchez into their wage structure while sources have told ESPN FC that City pulled out of negotiations with the 29-year-old because of concerns over the cost of the deal.

Those losses were attributed changes in corporate tax rates in the U.S., where their owners, the Glazer family operate.

In addition to being United's most successful Instagram post - his signing announcement making for two million likes and comments - he was the club's most shared Facebook and retweeted posts.

Woodward had earlier said in a statement accompanying the release of the accounts: "Our solid business model has allowed us to invest in the future of the club with the extension of Jose Mourinho's contract as manager and the acquisition of Alexis Sánchez".

The New York-listed club said this would help them long term but required an accounting write-off of £48.8m.

Another wave of TV cash could be around the corner with bids for a new three-year cycle for Premier League TV rights in the United Kingdom from 2019-2022 to be presented on Friday.

The Premier League is aiming to build on the record £5.14 billion three-year domestic television deal with Sky Sports and BT Sport, which runs until 2019.

The combination of Sanchez and No.7 has proved to be a huge commercial success in the weeks since the move, with United CEO Ed Woodward suggesting the reported £500,000-a-week salary being paid to the Chilean is well within the club's budget.
