Third militant killed, death toll reaches 5 — Sunjwan attack

Terror attack at Army camp in Jammu’s Sunjwan

Heavily armed Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists on Saturday struck at an army camp in Jammu, killing two personnel and injuring nine others including a major, almost 15 months after the Jammu region was hit by a similar attack. Nine people, including five women and children were also injured in the attack and two of them are in critical condition in the hospital. The Defence Spokesman confirmed that terrorists' belongings clearly indicate that they were Jaish-e-Mohammad cadre.

Briefing media persons at the main entrance of the camp, Jammu-based Army PRO Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand said the operation would continue till "all the terrorists are apprehended or killed".

Three of the attackers were gunned down after a 12-hour operation, the Army said. In a tweet, she said, "Deeply disturbed by the terrorist attack in #Sunjwan today".

Declaring its support for the government and the Army, the Congress urged the prime minister to personally supervise the anti-terror operation so that the security forces could give a befitting response to its sponsor Pakistan.

The two slain soldiers are from Jammu.

He said there have been 206 terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir alone and 382 Army personnel were killed in the last four years. Schools in the entire area around the camp have been closed by authorities as a precautionary measure.

He termed it as a "fidayeen attack" launched at the Sunjwan Militarty Station of 36 Brigade at around 4:10 am. Former J&K chief minister Farooq Abdullah said that Pakistan had to stop terrorism and linked most incidents to Pakistan.

The attack on the Sujwan camp came amid intelligence reports about a possible suicide attack by Jaish militants to mark the fifth death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Muhammad Afzal Guru who was hanged on February 9, 2013. The message allegedly said the attacks were a revenge for Afzal Guru's hanging. "The army needs to out more resources in guarding its installations", said Chaudhary, a retired IPS officer.
