The departure of Sorensen, who worked under Senior Policy Adviser Stephen Miller, came two days after Trump's staff secretary Rob Porter quit over allegations of abuse from two former wives.

Trump vented in a tweet that appeared to take aim at the rising #MeToo movement about sexual abuse and echoed his own denials of sexual impropriety in the face of accusations from more than a dozen women.

Adding to the administration's headaches, White House speechwriter David Sorensen tendered his resignation on Friday as The Washington Post was preparing to report accusations of domestic abuse leveled by his former wife.

Reeling from the downfall of a senior aide, the White House is on the defensive, attempting to soften President Donald Trump's comments about the mistreatment of women while rallying around the embattled chief of staff. Porter said he would be resigning from his role at the White House shortly after and has called the allegations "outrageous" and "simply false". "In this case, the president has denied any of these allegations".

"We understand there are also serious questions regarding when the White House first learned of these allegations and Mr".

While Kelly said in that second statement that "there is no place for domestic violence in our society", he added that "I stand by my previous comments of the Rob Porter that I have come to know since becoming chief of staff, and believe every individual deserves the right to defend their reputation".

"As you probably know, he says he's innocent, and I think you have to remember that".

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand from NY, who has come out strong in criticism of the Trump administration, said if due process is what the president wants, then that should also apply to the more-than dozen accusations of sexual assault that have been made against him.

Trump's tweet also struck a nerve with people who noted that assault survivors have their lives "shattered", too.

"(T) he West Wing continues to function.

Just like Porter, Sorensen strongly denies the allegations.

"But the irony for Kelly may be that the credibility that makes him a singular asset in this White House may have been irreparably damaged by his work in it".

"The perception of Kelly as above politics has been critical to his success in the West Wing".

In an interview with CNN, Porter's ex-wife Jennifer Willoughby detailed allegations of abuse, saying that during her marriage she lived under a "low-grade constant terror of not knowing what I might do to set something off". "When I tried to get help, I was counseled to consider carefully how what I said might affect his career". "He has said this in the past about incidents that relate to him as well".
