The move, spotted earlier by Engadget, was announced today and is effective immediately.

Chang joined HTC as its Chief Financial Officer in 2012 before becoming the smartphone and connected devices president in 2016.

Despite selling off most of its smartphone business to Google, HTC is not leaving the smartphone scene. Publicly, however, Chang's reason for resigning is listed as "personal career plan" on HTC's investor website.

HTC will likely be on the lookout for someone to replace Chang's position, but that could be an uphill battle for the company. HTC saw many executives depart and Chang was among the few veterans left.

We can confirm Chialin Chang has resigned from his position as President of the Smartphone and Connected Devices Business at HTC.

There is some moving and shaking going on at HTC, which is seemingly the result of Google acquiring key members from the company's smartphone team. The handset should then go on sale sometime in March or April, competing at the high-end segment of the smartphone market. An HTC handset said to be the HTC U12 (aka Imagine) was recently photographed at a 5G event run by a local carrier in Taiwan. Chang leaves months after HTC released its well-received 2017 flagship, the HTC U11. Before then though, HTC does have a major smartphone launch planned for this year, with the HTC U12. The company lost significant ground to rivals in recent years, however, and despite its efforts to catch up and get back on top, it's still struggling to return to its glory days.
