US Olympic Men's Hockey: Dates, times and Upstate New York athletes

Willie Desjardins

Jan Mursak scored the tying goal with 1:37 left in the third period and the victor in overtime as Slovenia rallied to stun Team USA in the Olympic opener for both teams.

It is the first Winter Olympic men's hockey tournament in 24 years without NHL players.

In the 3-on-3 overtime, Mursak got free on the doorstep and scored high over American goalie Ryan Zapolski less than a minute into the extra frame.

The other two men's games Wednesday will see Slovakia take on the star-studded Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation in the morning, and Finland face Germany in the evening.

Goals from Jan Urbas and Mursak in the third period sent the tie into overtime.

Team USA's debut in the 2018 Winter Olympics degenerated into a nightmare.

Blaz Gregorc scored early in the third period for Slovenia to cut the America's lead in half.

But it was a day for Mursak and Slovenia.

More news: Minnesota's flu season is worse than expected, and it's not done yet

Jordan Greenway, who still plays at Boston University, scored Team USA's second goal of the night at Kwandong Hockey Centre on Wednesday.

The U.S. struck first late in the opening period when Garrett Roe kept a loose puck in the Slovenian zone, carried it behind the net and fed Brian O'Neill who was streaking into the slot.

The United States could be poised to finally end Canada's run of four straight Olympic gold medals, with Wednesday's game serving as a litmus test for where both teams stand entering the medal round.

In Wednesday's game, the US got goals from Brian O'Neill and Boston University's Jordan Greenway.

Returning to the lineup later in the season, he had trouble finding any playing time, the Red Wings put him on waivers and Mursak signed with Amur Khabarovsk of the KHL. He was on the ice for Slovenia's first goal, but not the final two.

Of course, it's an upset for the U.S. Even without National Hockey League players on the team they were expected to beat Slovenia. After the US reached double-digits in number of shots taken, Brian O'Neill, a 29-year-old who plays in Finland, scored first for Team USA with just more than two minutes left in the first period.

The United States continues preliminary round play against Slovakia at 10:10 Eastern Thursday.
