These Photos Were Snapped by the Farthest-Ever Cameras from Earth

For a short time this New Horizons Long Range Reconnaissance Imager frame of the

About two hours later, New Horizons later broke the record again.

Voyager, by comparison, was 3.75 billion miles (6.06 billion kilometers) from Earth when it captured its famous photo in 1990.

According to a statement by NASA, the probe snapped a false-color image of a group of stars known as "Wishing Well" on December 5, 2017 while it was 6.12 billion km away from Earth and en route to the Kuiper Belt, a circumstellar disk surrounding the solar system.

On December 5th, 2017, New Horizons turned its Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) to the galactic open star cluster known as the "Wishing Well" and took a shot.

When you look at Earth from far enough away, all of us - our drama, political squabbling, and day-to-day worries - appear to be part of a speck of dusk, a pale blue dot floating in a vast cosmos of space. "And now, we've been able to make images farther from Earth than any spacecraft in history". However, that might not be the last we hear from New Horizons, as its power source could continue to provide life into 2026 and beyond.

However, an image captured by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft just smashed Voyager 1's achievement. At a distance of 3.79 billion miles, or 40.9 astronomical units from our cosmic home, the image took the crown from Voyager 1's "Pale Blue Dot" as the image taken farthest from Earth.

NASA has released a photograph taken 6.1 billion kilometres away from Earth. NASA scientists are also using the New Horizons craft to analyze plasma, dust, and gas in the region.

The false-color images of two of the observed objects - 2012 HZ84 and 2012 HE85 - are the farthest from Earth ever captured by a spacecraft. Considering that was an image of our own planet taken from afar, it figures that it'd probably remain the more popular and iconic of the two―humanity can be self-centered, after all, and the Kuiper Belt is remote.

The coming New Year's flight past MU69 will be the farthest planetary encounter in history, happening one billion miles beyond the Pluto system - which New Horizons famously explored in July 2015, NASA said. (Pluto is one of these dwarf planets.) 2014 MU69 is almost a billion miles beyond Pluto, which itself is 4.67 billion miles (7.5 billion km) beyond Earth. Now, it's zipping along at more than 700,000 miles (1.1 million kilometers) each day - moving farther and farther out into our solar system.

NASA also plans for the spacecraft to observe at least two-dozen other KBOs, dwarf planets, and Centaurs - the former KBOS in unstable orbits that cross the orbits of giant planets.

Despite this, Nasa's New Horizons team has spent months gathering data on the object in preparation for New Horizons' flyby in January 2019.
