Trump extends condolences to Putin over plane crash near Moscow

Trump told his Russian counterpart to relay the message that "now is the time to work toward an enduring peace agreement", the White House said.

The region's situation is "far from what we want to see", Putin said in comments carried by state news agency TASS.

In addition, the presidents discussed other topics of common concern - Trump, in particular, told Putin that more steps should be taken to ensure North Korea gives up its nuclear program, the White House said.

And there was a shift in President Trump's relationship with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, whose government has been attacking Trump's Jerusalem declaration and went as far as declaring Vice President Mike Pence persona non grata in Ramallah last time he asked to visit.

Abbas has refused any contact with Trump's administration since Washington's decision at the end of a year ago.

According to a Reuters report, Abbas and Putin spoke about the USA role in Mideast peace negotiations during a conference in Moscow.

In an interview with Reuters last month, Trump accused Russian Federation of helping North Korea evade sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council, saying that "Russia is not helping us at all with North Korea".

"The capital, having Jerusalem be your great capital was a very important thing to a lot of people", Trump said.

The Kremlin said the two leaders spoke by telephone.

Trump spoke today with President Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation to express his condolences regarding the crash of Saratov Airlines Flight 703 on February 11.

A Russian airliner on a regional flight crashed Sunday, killing everyone on board.

Following Trump's Jerusalem move, Abbas declared that he would "no longer accept" any peace plan proposed by the United States.

The White House's on-record denial of Netanyahu's claim, and the prime minister's swift reversal, was seen as an unprecedented clash between Jerusalem and the Trump administration.

That enabled the Palestinians to join global organisations and the worldwide Criminal Court, though they did not become a full United Nations member state.

Palestinians see the US Jerusalem decision, which broke with years of worldwide diplomacy, as a denial of their claim to East Jerusalem as the capital of an eventual Palestinian state.
