U.S. budget requests include military funds for Pakistan

The Pakistani Taliban says a senior militant, Khalid Mehsud, also known as Commander Sajna, was killed in a U.S. drone attack.

In announcing the death of Khan Said Sajna, the spokesman for the so-called Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, TTP, said the pre-dawn drone attack occurred on February 8 in the Gorwek area of North Waziristan.

Pakistani authorities suspect Sajna played a role in planning major terrorist attacks in the country and was instrumental in a jailbreak in 2012 in the northwestern town of Bannu that freed about 400 inmates, including militants. American missiles struck a vehicle carrying the militant commander and five of his security guards as they were entering Pakistani territory from the Afghan side, Pakistani intelligence officials said; all of the security guards were also killed in the strike.

He said another commander, Mufti Noor Wali, has now been appointed as the group's deputy chief. Pakistan had offered joint investigation into the Kabul's attacks that Kabul had blamed on the Haqqani Network.

Confirmation of the strike came shortly before Afghanistan Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai arrived in Islamabad for talks with Pakistani officials.

It described him as a true successor to the first two chiefs of TTP - Baitullah Mehsud, the groups founder, and Hakimullah Mehsud.

A high-ranking leader of the Pakistani Taliban died in a USA drone attack, the terrorist organization confirmed on Monday, Feb. 12.

Fazlullah tried to retaliate and sideline Mehsud by naming his rivals as the head of the TTP in South Waziristan - but was forced to give in after Mehsud's supporters fought and defeated Fazlullah's nominees.
