Vikings hiring Eagles QB coach John DeFilippo as offensive coordinator

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer right could soon lose Kevin Stefanski left to the Giants just like he lost Pat Shurmur

Stefanski spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons as the Vikings' tight ends coach, was the running backs coach in 2016 and then began coaching the quarterbacks this season.

Sporting News reported earlier this week that Stefanski was Shurmur's preferred choice for offensive coordinator, but the Vikings would not release him from his contract unless they were able to hire Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo as their next OC.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Vikings blocked the Giants from interviewing quarterback coach Kevin Stefanski, who was a guy NY was targeting to be its next offensive coordinator. Either he will be promoted to that role with the Minnesota Vikings or he will join Pat Shurmur and will that role with the New York Giants. By all other accounts, Shurmur was a big reason for the improvements on the Vikings offense this season and he is now gone. I think what's really good about Kevin, he's a communicator - so he communicates with me, we communicate to the quarterbacks and try to stay on the same page with them and Coach (Mike) Zimmer and what we're all thinking, and he's very organized. It was expected that since Stefanski had been passed over by the Vikings that he would then be named Shurmur's offensive coordinator in NY. Stefanski's title was assistant to the head coach through the 2008 season and this meant taking care of a variety of jobs.

Stefanski and Shurmur were known to have a strong working relationship, but the Vikings made a decision to deny that reunion, a somewhat surprising outcome given Shurmur's relationship with the organization and Stefanski losing out to former Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo for a similar job. The Vikings, you could say, are not letting Stefanski pursue his dreams of ascension in the National Football League coaching ranks. "Nonetheless, if the Vikings were going to tell Stefanski they didn't think he was good enough to be their coordinator, it is a slap to now make him stick around in a lesser position". If the Eagles lose Reich, they may keep Staley and promote him to become their own offensive coordinator. I believe they are in the contracts that both sides willingly sign.

But in this case, perhaps, one side exceeded expectations.

Instead DeFilippo, who was an offensive quality control coach for the Giants under Tom Coughlin in 2005-06, is headed to the team that the Eagles beat to win the NFC.

"He's a grinder", Foles said the day after the Super Bowl. I would offer that you better have the current quarterbacks coach, Kevin Stefanski, just as heavily involved in that discussion.
