Why eating quickly could accelerate weight gain

Slower-eating-speed-can-help-prevent-obesity

Slow eating is linked to weight loss, a new study has suggested. Next, the participants answered a set of questions about their eating speed ('fast", "normal' and "slow'), whether they had dinner within 2 hours of sleeping, but also habits concerning after-dinner snacking, skipping breakfast, alcohol consumption frequency, sleep adequacy and tobacco consumption".

It was an observational study, rather than a study where participants are getting assigned in random groups and requested to eat at different rates.

After taking into account other potential factors, the researchers found that those who said they ate at normal speed were 29 percent less likely to be obese than those who said they were fast eaters.

The World Health Organization considers someone with a BMI of 25 to be overweight and 30 or higher to be obese.

Although the study speculates there is an association with eating speed and obesity, it does not prove that eating speed either causes or prevents obesity.

You've no doubt heard of every fad diet and extreme fitness regime out there, but health professionals have suggested that something as simple as how you eat could have just as much influence whether or not you're likely to lose or gain weight. Whether people regularly ate or skipped breakfast did not seem to have an effect on change in BMI. These people were asked about their eating habits and were made to categorize the speed at which they consumed food.

The researchers found that of the 60,000 participants, 22,070 people routinely wolfed down their food, 33,455 ate at a normal speed, and 4,192 classed themselves as slow eaters.

"Changes in eating speed can affect changes in obesity, BMI and waist circumference", researchers from Japan's Kyushu University recently wrote in the report.

BMI stands for Body Mass Index, a ratio of weight-to-height used to determine whether a person falls within a healthy range. The study tracked almost 60,000 people and discovered that how fast they ate and the timing of their evening meal and snacks appeared to be significant factors in whether they ended up obese or managed to lose weight.

"It is certainly not appropriate to extrapolate from these observations to conclude about eating speed and the development of obesity - however attractive the idea that fast eaters are likely to eat more, and that eating more leads to weight gain", he said.

When eating too quickly, there's more chance that these hormones won't get the chance to work properly, Rebecca, who is a Nutritional Therapist, said.

Eating slowly, eating breakfast, and not eating midnight snacks are not the only things that people need to do to lose weight though. "Interventions aimed at reducing eating speed may be effective in preventing obesity and lowering the associated health risks", the researchers added.
