This Character Can Crash Almost All Apps on Apple Devices

3 Companies Set to Lose From Apple's 2018 iPhones

Spotted by Mobile World and The Verge, it involves receiving an Indian language character. Following a deluge of bad reports on its new HomePod speaker - mixed reviews, reports of stained furniture, and even somewhat scarce profits- it's now the turn of yet another software issue. Apps that try to do so will freeze and shut down.

Because so many apps are affected, the new text bomb could be used to create mass chaos if spammed across an open social platform or used to target individuals via email or messaging.

PCMag said that the bug worked on the iPad too. However, the problems didn't end there.

Italian blog MobileWorld first reported its existence, and The Verge noticed and tested the bug, which consists of partially or fully crashing an iPhone just by sending a message. Facebook Messenger, for instance, shut down whenever it came across a chat containing the symbol.

Starting this April, all iOS developers are required to make their apps compatible with the iPhone X, meaning their design must put into consideration the phone's almost bezel-less OLED display and the huge notch above.

The moment a text with the bug is received, the app that opened the text crashes. The iOS Springboard reportedly freezes the moment Messages has received the message.

Engineers at software maker Aloha Browser warned about the bug earlier this week.

Here's a tweet that shows how the Telugu character crashes the apps.

iOS, watchOS, and macOS are all afflicted by it, save for the latest beta version of iOS. Reports suggest that the bug can also be exploited on Safari and Messages on macOS as well as the Apple Watch. Don't what ever you do try to create a filesystem folder using that symbol.

To help address the situation, Apple says its already working on a patch that will fix the bug, which should arrive in the form of an intermediary update before iOS 11.3 (which is now in beta) gets officially released.
