White House proposing to change how millions of Americans eat

Trump Administration Wants To Decide What Food SNAP Recipients Will Get

Under a food delivery plan proposed by the Trump administration, more than 16 million households would have half their benefits go toward the box delivery program.

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney described the new proposal as a "Blue Apron-type program where you actually receive the food instead of receive the cash".

This and other changes in the SNAP program, according to the Trump administration, will reduce the SNAP budget by $213 billion over those years - cutting the program by nearly 30 percent.

A major change to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, could be in the future. The proposal puts the United States government directly in charge of what kind of food ends up on the dinner tables of SNAP recipients, and it's causing some controversy.

Some rural stores' survival depends on SNAP benefits, Haynes-Maslow said. "Removing choice from SNAP flies in the face of encouraging personal responsibility", he said.

"Food stamp recipients would receive at least half of their benefits through a food box and the food box would be non-perishable food items, similar to items we have all around the food bank", said Zack Wilson, the Executive Director of the High Plains Food Bank.

The budget includes the proposal as part of a complete revamp of the SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which now provides low-income families with electronic benefits that can be used to purchase groceries at authorized retailers.

Leaders at the state's Department of Health and the Department of Social and Health Services on Wednesday raised concerns about the proposal - specifically a plan to introduce a food delivery program for people receiving benefits.

The Trump Administration has proposed changing SNAP benefits, which would affect more than 80% of the recipient.

A spokesperson with Florida's Department of Children and Families (DCF) confirmed with Breitbart News that the agency "has not received" any specific information about what the USDA guidelines for things like dietary restrictions would be for state agencies dealing with SNAP. "They might not even use the items in the box", Haynes-Maslow said.

At the LA mission-they make 700 boxes of food a week for needy families.

Tyson says the boxes can be tailored to an individual's nutritional needs, unlike the proposed "America's Harvest Boxes".

"They're cuts", Dean said.

Mulvaney and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue both referred to the proposal as a multipurpose, "innovative" approach that provides "nutritious food" to people, eliminates fraud, and promotes Trump's "Buy American" push. "You now you want to be able to go to the store and buy anything you want to eat for you and your familly", Davis said. This time, it's a farm bill year, meaning many budgetary decisions will be made among the House and Senate agriculture committees.
