The Chiefs were in final talks Friday with the Rams to trade the standout defensive back, according to a report from NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
The Kansas City Chiefs' new general manager raised eyebrows earlier this offseason by reportedly agreeing to trade Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins. The team also decided not to resign the team's all-time leading tackler Derrick Johnson.
"The 6'0", 197 pound cornerback is fresh off a season in which he recorded 46 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, 5 interceptions, and 9 passes defensed in 14 starts. He went on pick after the 49ers chose defensive lineman Arik Armstead, who has struggled to stay on the field in two of his three seasons and has six career sacks. The 28-year-old will now head into free agency as one of the top corners on the market.
The Rams own the No. 23 overall pick in this year's draft but do not have a second-round pick, which they sent to Buffalo last year in the trade that brought in receiver Sammy Watkins.
More news: The drugs do work - study suggests antidepressants are effectiveAfter a few days of speculation about cornerback Marcus Peters' future in Kansas City, it appears he won't have one. The writing has been on the wall, especially after Andy Reid opted to suspend Peters for a game this past season.
After trading up to get Patrick Mahomes a year ago, the Chiefs entered 2018 without much draft capital. Peters has one year remaining on his rookie contract, but the Rams also could pick up an option for 2019.
The Rams and Johnson couldn't agree on a long-term deal after he played on the franchise tag for two straight seasons. Elsewhere defensively, moving Peters should allow the Chiefs to keep edge-rushing outside linebacker Justin Houston.
By getting Peters, the Rams get a cornerback who has been better than Johnson and comes with a cap hit just over $3 million in 2017.
