New Yorker arrested in Japan over severed head in suitcase

American in Custody After Severed Head Is Found in Japan

Hyogo prefectural police said investigators found a torso, arms and legs in three locations in parts of Kyoto and Osaka on Sunday. Police have reportedly described the body parts as having no apparent injuries apart from where they were severed.

The mother of an American male in custody in connection with the disappearance of a 27-year-old woman, who police believe is dead, told Nippon News Network (Feb. 25) that their son has a fondness for Japan.

Friends told police that the woman said she was going to meet an American she met online.

Video records from security cameras and other devices showed that Bayraktar went in and out of the Higashinari condominium several times carrying a large travel bag on February 18.

Both the NY man and the woman were spotted together on security footage at the JR Morinomiya Station in Osaka around midnight on Friday, Feb. 16, just hours before she went missing.

The BBC reports that no other human remains have been found.

The severed head of what appears to be that of the missing woman was found Saturday as investigators were searching the apartment in Osaka's Higashinari Ward that Bayraktar had been staying in since February 12. There were no traces of wounds besides the cuts made to sever the body parts.

The suspect has been named in Japanese media as Yevgeniy Vasilievich Bayraktar, 26, of NY. At the vacation home rental, authorities discovered the severed head of the woman, who has not yet been identified, inside of a suitcase.

The man was arrested for allegedly "confining" the woman in an apartment in Osaka, the Japan Times reported. The footage does not show the woman ever leaving the premises.

Nippon TV reported that the man's parents denied allegations, and said Bayraktar had always dreamed about marrying a Japanese woman. He is thought to have taken several other women into the same Higashinari apartment, although police have confirmed they are safe, according to the Mainichi newspaper.
