Withdrawal of troops from Dapchi not responsible for abduction ―Army

Dapchi Girls: Hold Army, Police Responsible …-Dogara …As FG Lists Details Of Missing 110 Students ….Army Speaks

A group, United Young Professionals (UYP) has urged the Nigeria Army to rescue the schoolgirls of Government Girls Science and Technical College (GGSTC) who were abducted by Boko Haram terrorists in Dapchi, Yobe State, on 19 February.

"The statements credited to the Army and the Police in which they tried to exonerate themselves from any culpability in the unfortunate and embarrassing abduction of innocent girls from their school in Dapchi, Yobe State, are highly condemnable".

"We know that girls who return to their communities after escaping capture, often with children, face stigma and exclusion, so it is likely this incident will affect these girls for the rest of their lives".

Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, has had to clarify that the administration is not trying to claim that Boko Haram has been completely defeated, but that it has been severely weakened.

The people did not only boo the number one citizen of the state but threw stones and risky objects at his convoy, resulting in the destruction of some vehicles.

While explaining reasons for the withdrawal, Colonel Nwachukwu said soldiers earlier deployed in Dapchi were redeployed for reinforcement duty at Kanama following attacks on troops' location at the Nigerian - Nigerien border.

On his part, Idris Abdul, Executive Director of Centre for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR), who described the abduction of the school girls as a national embarrassment, blamed the federal and state governments for leaving the girls vulnerable.

It reads: "The attention of the Yobe State Police Command has been drawn to Press Statement from Headquarters of Operation Lafiya Dole subscribing that "Dapchi has been relatively calm and peaceful and the security of Dapchi town was formally handed over to the Nigeria Police Division located in the town".

The authorities in Abuja had previously stopped short of saying the 110 students were seized during the raid on the Government Girls Science and Technology College in Dapchi last Monday.

The military has come under public criticism since Governor Ibrahim Geidam of Yobe State first raised the allegation on February 24 that the military abruptly withdrew from Dapchi a week before the attack. "WE SHALL", one of the movement's organizers, Oby Ezekewsili, said on Twitter of the Dapchi attack.

Mr. Nwachukwu said the police were placed in charge of security operations in Dapchi, which he said had never been attacked before January 19 and was never under any imminent threat of Boko Haram.

"There are ways and rules guiding hand-over of troubled territories to another security sister agencies".
