Scientists found Penguin super colony from space

A tiny group of islands in the Antarctic ocean called the Danger Islands are home to nearly 1.5 million penguins. A tiny group of islands in the Antarctic ocean called the Danger Islands are home to nearly 1.5 million penguins

Heather Lynch, Associate Professor of Ecology & Evolution Stony Brook University and colleague Mathew Schwaller had been examining satellite imagery of the Danger Islands, a chain of remote, rocky islands off of the Antarctic Peninsula's northern tip and saw what was clearly guano stains. The lack of humans and effects from climate change may contribute to the super colony's ability to thrive on the Danger Islands. It should stay that way. Once those huge pictures are accessible, he says, his group can utilize neural system programming to break down them, pixel by pixel, scanning for penguin settles self-sufficiently.

"Over a million people worldwide are now backing the call for an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary".

In 2014, NASA researchers noticed an unusual amount of penguin droppings on the Danger Islands - a remote area that was not considered an important penguin habitat. This meant there were more Adélie penguins in the Danger Islands than in the rest of the Antartica Peninsula combined, as the researchers report in the study, which was published in Scientific Reports.

The proposal for an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary has been submitted by the European Union and will be considered when the Antarctic Ocean Commission next convenes, in October 2018.

The discovery of a massive new bird city shows things must be picking up for the penguins.

After gathering those photos, the scientists were able to use an algorithm to actually look for the penguins instead of searching for them by eye, pixel by pixel.

The Danger Islands are always covered with ice and even during the summer, the temperatures on the islands are favoring penguins proliferation.

In the research paper, the scientists recommend that the islands be classified as a "penguin hotspot of significant conservation value", and that the area be given refuge status.

"The results of our study indicate that not only do the Danger Islands hold the largest population of Adélie penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula, they also appear to have not suffered the populations declines found along the western side of Antarctic Peninsula that are associated with recent climate change", Polito said. The colony numbers 751,527 breeding pairs of penguins - over a million and a half individuals.

"We were.very lucky to have a window of time where the sea ice moved out and we could get a yacht in".

It could also help them understand what is causing other populations to decline when these penguins are thriving.

To count the newly discovered penguins, the scientists used human and artificial intelligence. These also provide evidence to support the proposed Marine Protected Areas near the Antarctic Peninsula.
