Selfies can make your nose look huge, researchers say

Bellamy Young takes a selfie as she arrives at the world premiere

Using a mathematical model, the group found that in a selfie taken from 12 inches away, the nose appears 30 percent wider than in a photo taken from 5 feet.

The results showed that selfies made the nose appear around 30 percent larger for men and around 29 per cent for women. To avoid the pain and thousands of dollars in plastic surgery costs, try finding a friend to take your photo 5 feet away.

But at a more normal selfie distance of 12 inches, the nose can look almost a third wider than it really is - adding to the insecurity many people already feel about their physical appearance and online persona.

Pictures taken close to the face distort the proportions of your features, study reports.

. But when you step away from the camera, the relative distance between your nose and the rest of the face flattens - making your nose appear more proportionate.

"I want them to realize that when they take a selfie they are in essence looking into a portable funhouse mirror", Paskhover said.

The average selfies, taken around 12 inches from the face, makes the nasal base look 30 percent wider and the nasal tip 7 percent wider, compared to a photo taken from afar, the study found. Last year, the first large-scale study of selfies confirmed that users of at least one social platform, Instagram, most often post selfies to show off how fashionable, good-looking and all around awesome they are.

The selfie trend took the smartphone world by storm years ago, prompting many smartphone makers to build what they think is the flawless selfie camera.

His team's facial model was based on data collected from a sample of racially and ethnically diverse participants in the US. According to a 2017 poll, 55 percent of facial plastic surgeons reported seeing patients who wanted surgeries to help them look better in selfies, up from 13 percent in 2016.

"Just like the 24-hour news cycle, where we have constant information, with selfies and phones we have constant feedback about what our appearance might be", says Dr. Samuel Lin, an associate professor of plastic surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. It calculated the changes to the ratio between the nose's breadth and the width between the two cheekbones at various camera distances.

"People have to be aware that selfies change how your face looks", Dr Paskhover said.
