White House faces rumours about top security aide's exit

National security adviser H.R. Mc Master listens during the daily press briefing at the White House Monday

The White House and Pentagon have been preparing for National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster to move out of his role in the administration and possibly return with a promotion to a job in the military, sources tell ABC News.

Trump and McMaster have had an uneasy relationship.

McMaster has grown increasingly frustrated with President Trump and is considering retiring to the Pentagon, Reuters reported last week.

On Thursday, NBC News reported that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Defense Secretary James Mattis were planning to remove McMaster.

But McMaster, an Army lieutenant general, has often found himself at odds with Trump, and media reports have indicated clashes between the men.

"He told McMaster he is doing a great job", Anton said.

Compounding the report, CNN's Jim Sciutto said that McMaster has been discussing a potential position with the Stanford Hoover Institution.

Former Staff Secretary Rob Porter's resignation has reportedly upended the White House's hierarchy, leaving Cohn to jockey for the president's approval against nationalist hardliners like trade advisor Peter Navarro, according to POLITICO.

Biegun has a long line of government jobs working as an adviser to relatively hawkish officials.

However, sources tell Garrett that the tension regarding McMaster is real, and that an exit strategy may now be in the works.

White House principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah denied that any departure is imminent: "We frequently face rumor and innuendo about senior administration officials".

The White House had no immediate reaction and said it had no personnel announcements.

"General McMaster forgot to say that the results of the 2016 election were not impacted or changed by the Russians and that the only Collusion was between Russia and Crooked H, the DNC and the Dems", Trump tweeted.

As for talk of a White House in upheaval, Sanders pointed out the tax cuts passed late past year: "If they want to call it chaos, fine, but we call it success and productivity and we're going to keep plugging along". He has traveled with Trump to several countries and helped craft the president's national security approach to North Korea, Afghanistan, Iran and other global hot spots.
