Al-Qaida-Linked Group Claims Responsibility For Burkina Faso attack

Burkina Faso Attacks on local army HQ and French embassy kill at least 7

No one has claimed responsibility for Friday's attacks in the capital Ouagadougou, which follow two other major assaults in the past two years.

It was unclear whether these figures applied to one or to both attacks.

Burkinabe state television said the unidentified gunmen killed five soldiers and wounded 64 at the military headquarters.

French President Emmanuel Macron's office says he is following the situation and French authorities are urging French citizens to avoid the city center.

More importantly, Burkina Faso contributes more troops to the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali than other West African nations, he said.

Abbas expressed his heartfelt sorrow for the people of Burkina Faso and victims' families, affirming Palestine's full support in the country's fight against terrorism.

France's embassy and cultural institute in Ouagadougou are no longer in danger, an aide to Foreign Minister Jean-Yves le Drian said.

This has continued to deal harsh "blows" to the economy of some of the poorest people in the world.

Three security sources, two in France and one in West Africa, told AFP that at least 28 people were killed in the attack on the military headquarters alone.

Five countries, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Mali and Mauritania, launched a new task force in 2017 to tackle Islamist militants in the arid Sahel region, to which worldwide donors have committed half a billion dollars.

French President Emmanuel Macron offered his condolences, Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is on a visit to neighbouring Mali, "strongly condemned" the attack while the United Nations chief Antonio Guterres called for an "urgent and concerted effort" to improve stability in the Sahel.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but previous attacks were conducted by allies of al Qaeda in reprisal for Burkina Faso's participation in a regional fight against Islamist militants.

Plumes of black smoke could be seen above the army offices in western Ouagadougou where police and gendarmerie responded.

Paul Kaba Thieba met with the army chief at the army headquarters, where the assault killed at least six soldiers, including a senior officer.

Today saw further unrest when one person was shot dead after three people attempted to storm a roadblock in the early hours near the presidential compound, a government source told AFP.

The group, a fusion of three Malian jihadist groups with previous al-Qaida links, have been behind several high-profile attacks against civilian and military forces since forming a year ago.
