Washington governor signs first state law to protect net neutrality

Washington Governor Signs First State Net Neutrality Bill

In order to create level playing field for all content creators and to overrule the control of the internet service provider, Jay Inslee, the governor of Washington signed a bill related that sets the rules for the net neutrality in the USA; thus becoming the first state in the U.S. to have its own net neutrality act. "We've seen the power of an open internet". Most of the countries have laws for intellectual properties in place but, internet providers across the world were lobbying for not having any law over net neutrality. "[Washington state governor Jay] Inslee said he was confident of its legality, saying 'the states have a full right to protect their citizens'".

In 2015, the FCC voted 3 to 2 along party lines to approve rules enshrining what's known as net neutrality - the idea that all types of digital traffic should be treated equally, whether it's email, Web content, video or any other kind of data.

The law, signed Monday and effective on June 6, will prohibit internet service providers from blocking legal content, applications, services or non-harmful devices. It's unclear when Oregon's measure would be signed into law. Attorneys general in almost two dozen states, joined by public interest groups and internet companies, have sued to overturn the repeal. There are also efforts by Democrats to undo the move in Congress. The Washington Post piece is fair-minded, to be sure, but it's worth noting that nothing can truly be known on this score until FCC Chairman Ajit Pai's repeal of net neutrality rules goes into effect.

Meanwhile, large telecommunications companies like Verizon (NYSE: VZ), Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA), and AT&T (NYSE: T), which have argued they should have the ability to manage traffic on the networks they operate, are likely to oppose the Washington law.

Washington has become the first state in the nation to pass a net neutrality bill.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signs a bill in Olympia, Wash., that makes Washington the first state to set up its own net-neutrality requirements in response to the Federal Communications Commission's recent repeal of Obama-era rules. In a legal petition filed with the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit this week, the consortium against the FCC's decision to end net neutrality.

"This is not a partisan issue", Norma Smith, a Republican who co-sponsored the bill in the House, said in a statement last month.

Some states are passing their own laws.
